Bitches get stuff done.

.

I’ve actually been busy having fun over the past few days, for the first time in ages, and nature is obviously on my side because the weather is gorgeous. I am actually roasting in my flat right now at 11.20pm, with the heating off and the windows open. This is when we could use some air con in Scotland! On Monday I gave a Twitter training in Edinburgh, met my friend there, looked around the shops and had dinner in Wagamamas. The next day I went to the park with my other friend for a while, then went to the cinema to see Dark Shadows with my other friend, then went for one drink with her and her friend, then went back to the cinema by myself to see Two Days in New York. Yesterday I dyed my hair, then I made chili for a few of my friends as it was my friend’s birthday night so people came to my flat for dinner first, then we went to Butterfly and the Pig and Flat 0/1, which was extremely “hipster”. I bought a half pint of Frosty Jacks for 75p there. This was a momentous occasion. And today I went to the park again with a few friends and sat in the sun for hours, then I came back to my flat and made myself fajitas and watched The Kids Are Alright. At some point during this time I have also read about 85 pages of The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Sparks. I intend to go and read the rest of it now! This is my holiday! :D

FINISHED!

I had my last exam today- possibly my last ever exam, I’m not sure if the masters will involve exams? It didn’t sound like it from the descriptions.

So my degree is over. In July I should be graduating with my BA Honours in Politics and English.

So tonight I’m going out to polo to give out flyers for the LGBT Youth Scotland survey (www.surveymonkey.com/s/LifeInScotland2012) and celibraaaate.

I’m actually pretty tired and have the urge to read a book, but I feel it my study to get drunk tonight!

EDIT: Added that to my queue and then noticed I wrote study instead of duty. This is how much I’ve had exams on the brain!

P.S. The survey is only open for 1 more week so you should totally do it if it applies to you! It’s for anyone who is 13-25, LGBT and living in Scotland.

Feminist Frequency - Tropes vs. Women: #1 The Manic Pixie Dream Girl

I take severe issue with some of the pictures displayed here!!! Eternal Sunshine and Elizabethtown are two of my favourite movies!

Particularly with Clementine I have no idea how she is a manic pixie dream girl!? Obviously she is stunning because she’s Kate Winslet, but she actually isn’t done-up in the obviously perfect way in which Zooey Deschanel is, and her character is complicated and neurotic and not remotely perfect, and the relationship shown between her in Joel is actually pretty negative, and she clearly doesn’t go out of her way to make him happy at all, and in fact seems to make him more unhappy than anything else…but they are happier to be together than apart because they’re in love and it is a romance! Some of that description up till the ending could apply to 500 Days of Summer, but anyone who has seen these movies knows that they are worlds apart! I really did not see the only purpose of Clementine as being an inspiration for Joel.

And Claire in Elizabethtown….well she is my perfect manic pixie dream girl and I don’t even care! I thought she was a wonderful character in her own right and I’ve always genuinely thought to myself that she is my idea of the perfect girlfriend!

Feminism, I love you, but there are some things I won’t let you take from me!!!!

ASA rules Paddy Power transgender TV ad was offensive

fuckyeahgenderstudies:

Complaints about an advert for bookmaker Paddy Power featuring transgender people have been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority

[…]

Upholding the complaints, the ASA said: “We considered that the ad trivialised a highly complex issue and depicted a number of common negative stereotypes about trans people.

“We considered that by suggesting that trans women would look like men in drag, and that their gender could be speculated on as part of a game, the ad irresponsibly reinforced those negative stereotypes.

“And, particularly by framing the game in a way that involved a member of the public who had commented on Paddy Power’s Facebook page, the ad condoned and encouraged harmful discriminatory behaviour and treatment.”

This is the funniest/worst bit:

A Paddy Power spokesman said the company was disappointed with the ASA’s ruling. […] “it is worth pointing out that the commercial has almost 600,000 views with twice as many ‘likes’ than ‘dislikes”.

(!!!)

Yes because people “liking” something on the internet is an accurate way of determining whether or not it is offensive. Nobody on the internet likes offensive things. Perhaps we should start running elections or referenda on political issues by measuring the number of likes and dislikes something gets online.
